Umno’s pro-royalty stance in question

In the name of the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, Umno organised a rally on Thursday night to demonstrate the “people's anger”.

But cynicism abounds as it was the Malay political party that had, in the 1993 constitutional crisis, campaigned against the Rulers' alleged excesses and wrongdoings, analysts say.

“The monarchy is the backbone of the nation, and we will defend it through and through. If we let things continue as they are, innocent people will suffer and it will be chaos,” Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said at the rally.

He was cheered by about 3,000 people, most of them dressed in yellow — the colour of royalty — and wearing headbands with the words Daulat Tuanku (Long live the King).

Many Malaysians have not forgotten that in 1993, Umno took the exact opposite position regarding the monarchy.

Among the changes Umno pushed for then were to lift Malay Rulers' immunity from being tried in a special court, and to withdraw unscheduled and unbudgeted allocations and perks to the nine royal houses.

The Mahathir administration had revealed in Parliament a long list of alleged criminal acts by the Sultan of Johor between March 1972 and November 1992.

This has coloured public perception of the monarchy.

Aiyoo....EVERYONE can see through the hypocrisy of UMNO/BN. Yet, like the naked Emperor who went to town thinking he was wearing his new clothes, their arrogance blinds them to their own ugliness.

So who's insulting the Sultans now?

Now, I'm not royalty.

But if I were, I would certainly feel SHOCKED, HUMILIATED and CERTAINLY INSULTED that I had been forced to accept as my "defenders" a bunch of corrupt clowns screaming and threatening murder.

Imagine Adolf Hitler or the Klu Klux Klan as the defenders of the British Crown.

You get the idea...

(PS - some UMNO supporter (I guess) defended the vicious racist postings on another blog that in overseas, Nazi & KKK were allowed to openly publish their propaganda and hold parades as part of their Freedom of Speech guarantee. And all the while, these UMNO fellas were fiercely attacking me for trying to be sensible! Orang lain speak reasonably - kena marah. UMNO shouting all kinds of seditious and even murderous statements - Freedom of Speech. Well, that's UMNO for you la.)
