No Need By-Election In Kuala Nerang Meh?

Umno will help Kuala Nerang rep declared a bankrupt

By Embun Majid, The Star

Umno will help resolve the problems faced by its Kuala Nerang assemblyman Datuk Syed Sobri Syed Hashim, who is said to have been declared a bankrupt last November.

Party vice-president Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, who is the new Kedah Umno chief, said he met the assemblyman to discuss his problems on Sunday.

“It is inappropriate for me to reveal to you the problems that he is facing but we will find ways to help him to reduce his burden.

“He is willing to listen and get legal advice. I believe his problem will be settled soon,” he told newsmen after opening the Third Regional Policy Dialogue on Rural Transformation and Poverty Reduction Malaysia’s Success Story here yesterday.

I thought if an assemblyman is declared bankrupt, his/her is automatically deemed vacant? Under Malaysian law, bankrupts cannot be elected reps, kan?

In the Federal Constitution, it is stated clearly that a person is disqualified for being a member of either House of Parliament if he is an undischarged bankrupt. Is it there a similar provision in the Kedah state constitution?

Anyone got the info on this?

  1. I do not understand why PAS does not make a big fuss about it. UMNO-BN not abiding by the law is nothing out of the extraordinary, it is UMNO's trademark. Winning this seat may be helpful for the future in case UMNO wants to do a Perak-like coup in Kedah in the future.
