The Case Against UMNO/BN

This is a sad, sad article written by Ku Li:

Chow Kit

I have fallen a little behind with my blog. People have been asking me what I think of the so-called Second Stimulus Package. What I have to say about it can wait a little while longer. My comments would do little to lift the dismay of our citizens and business people with a package as puzzlingly weak, and directionless, as it is large.

Last Thursday I visited Rumah Nur Salam, a centre for homeless children in KL’s Jalan Chow Kit area. Rumah Nur Salam is founded and led by the indefatigable Dr Hartini Zainuddin, the daughter of dear departed friend of mine. I spent some time with the children and toured the centre, which is, as its name implies, a haven of peace in a very troubled area.

Here, in Chow Kit, in the heart of Kuala Lumpur, less than a kilometre from the Twin Towers and a stone’s thrown from PWTC, life is cheap, drug users shoot up in the back alleys and children wander the streets hungry. Infants are bought and sold by syndicates, young children are supplied for prostitution and child-pornography. Hundreds of children are on the streets or homeless. They beg and hustle and sell themselves for sex. They are runaways or abandoned or neglected children, vulnerable to STD and HIV, to drug addiction and to rape and murder. Many among them have no registration papers. Although they may have been born to Malaysian parents they are “stateless” and therefore ineligible for free inoculation, medical education or education. They are abused and traded with impunity by criminals and corrupt officials because when they disappear it is without trace. They are nobody’s constituency.

When I speak against the UMNO-led BN government, I am often accused of partisan politics, anti-Malay racism (or bigotries of all kinds), being stupid, threatening Malay rights, etc. But Tengku Razaleigh here has elegantly highlighted another one of the reasons why I believe that UMNO/BN no longer has any right to rule.

On many blogs that I visit, there are many comments on what we see happening around us - most notably within the ranks of government, police, judiciary, EC and such. But it's what we do NOT see that will truly shock you. The depths of corruption that this nation has fallen into goes beyond just the politics we see on a daily basis.

Ku Li's article above reminded me of the social workers, NGO people and government servants whom I've met. They tell me stories of how our country and its people have been left to their own devices. And how the cats have not only left the scene, but many have joined the rats in their activities (and have become fat cats!)

From these frontline people, I hear of how people are traded freely like cattle at our borders in the north and west, and high-placed government officials active participants in this "business". The slave trade is alive and flourishing in Malaysia.

I also hear that the kingpins of organised crime in this country are high-level politicians. An example would be that once-illegal electronic horse-racing machines can suddenly get legitimate licences to operate their gambling activities.

I hear about how orang asli are routinely denied their rights and constantly harassed, unless they support the "right" political party and join the "right" religion, at which time the taps open and money gushes.

Malaysia was once a much-feared country for drug dealers and syndicates because of our merciless death sentence. But drugs are now openly traded even in prisons and lockups - by prison officials, no less!

I met a guy who worked for the Forestry Department. He told me that official government statistics say that primary forest coverage (virgin forest) in Peninsular Malaysia is above 30%. Whereas in reality, it is closer to 10%. And we wonder why our country is suffering from freak weather, depleting vital resources (like water) and climate change!

And the list goes on and on.

What does this have to do with politics, you may ask?

Nothing at all.

This is not about politics. This is about saving our country. Why, with all our inherent strengths, do these injustices occur? Why are they multiplying? Why is there nothing done about it? It all boils down to leadership.

There is no effective leadership in the country. If there were,
1) in the first place, our country would not have descended into the state it is in now, and
2) we would see real change happening in our society today.

As it is, too many of our so-called leaders are too busy pursuing their own agenda to do their job properly. These so-called leaders are grossly mismanaging our country - that's why we are descending ever deeper into the cesspool. The rakyat's welfare is furthest from their minds. They are so engrossed in their money and power plays, they have no idea of the issues affecting our country.

Having run the ship aground, they have yet to wake up to reality. If they sincerely had any concern for our country, they would be engaging the stakeholders to find a way to make our country great again. Instead, what do we see?

More disgusting power plays, the blatant abuse of state apparatus and the so-called independent bodies are nothing more than the guard dogs of the government.

How can such a party that provides no leadership, has no respect for the rule of law, treats the rakyat as their personal cash cow, sweeps problems under the carpet, threatens people with differing ideas and abuses the institutions of our country be allowed to continue to rule? We are fast becoming a nation ruled by a committee of despots.

As it is now, several African nations have surpassed us in various international rankings. And the UMNO/BN power plays occuring today will certainly not engender more confidence - from both within and without the country.

There is no other way. If UMNO/BN is allowed to continue to mismanage the country, they will have dug a hole for our country perhaps too deep for us to climb out of. I shudder to think that one day, we will be in the same league as Zimbabwe.

Unless UMNO/BN repents - turn over a new leaf and begin serving the rakyat again. But since that is a dim, dim prospect, the only choice is to remove them completely until the day comes when they are ready to rule again.

  1. Dear Eyeswideopen,

I share your despair at what is happening to this great nation, its assets & it people.

God Almighty "Hears & Feels" the Call, the Pain & the Despair of the downtrodden & Displaced rayaat.

This Hartal in 1947 by the Malayan citizens (Malays, Chinese, Indians, etc together) then, against the Colonial Administration's exploitation & abuse of power....

It was a Peaceful Protest of Disobedience that produced results - Relevant to the situations then !

The later group - British educated & trained (Oxford, Cambridge, etc) Intellectuals & Professionals....

In 1957 FINALLY gained our Independence from the "Colonial British Rule" through the citizen's "concerted" struggle & the Leadership of our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957,

That was the old UMNO (led by Tunku), MCA (lead by Tun Tan Cheng Lock) & MIC (lead by Tun Sambanthan) under the banner of the "Alliance" government.

Is not that the "Better & Smarter" choice by the Leadership of our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law in 1957....

Through Political negotiations & POLITICAL SOLUTIONS leading to a "Bloodless" handover & the Independence of Malaya!

It proves a point that a Educated, Intelligent, Smart & Wise leaders do not have to resort to Threats, Militancy & unnecessary Battles with collateral damage & bloodshed to the citizens!

I was there at the Dataran Merdeka to witness the occassion on 31st August 1957 - the joy, tears & jubilation of Tunku, his cabinet & every Malay, Chinese, Indian, etc citizen of Malaya !

So let us ALL accept the fact that our forefathers suffered but persevered & did not give up the struggle for Independence....until it was achieved !

Let us ALL also learn that Tunku & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS, EARNED the RESPECT, TRUST & SUPPORT of ALL the Malayan citizens.

It was in 1969 our Bapa Malaysia Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra & his Malaysian cabinet of TRUE TUANS managing the system of Wesminster style Democracy & with the Rule of Law was "Betrayed" with the "Bloody 13th May 1969 BLOODY "coup d’état" by the "Elite UMNO Ketetuanan BEGGARS"....Tun Razak & his group...

Some of those are still "Alive, Kicking & Mentoring ALL the New Ketetuanan Beggar Wannabes."

So how can they be "Honourable" to carry out their duties diligently without "Fear or favour" or "Step Down Honourably", even after taking an "Oath" to the King/Sultan/the nation & rayaat."

This great nation, its assets & its Anak Bangsa Malaysia have been abused for the last 40 years by these "Moronic Idiots & their Goons" through "Gutter Politics" & the "Law of the Jungle".

The 8th March 2008 elections offered us an "Alternative to the UMNO/BN Autocratic Government.

In 2009, We are ALL Anak Bangsa Malaysia led by all the Defenders of Truth" to restore "Justice, Equality, Human Rights & Freedom" with our struggles to achieve our 2nd Independence....

Not from the British Administration, BUT from our own kind (UMNO Baru, MCA & MIC regime.

    The nation must NOW ask....

UMNO/BN & its Leaders to CONFIRM Honestly or by UMNO's swearing To God Almighty....

That UMNO/BN & its Leaders since 13 May 1969 have NOT committed ANY of the following :

    10 Sins Against Humanity

    Politics without Principles....
    Wealth without Work....
    Enjoyment without Conscience....
    Knowledge without Character....
    Business without Morality....
    Science without Humanity....
    Religion without Compassion....
    Rights without Responsibility....
    Power without Accountability....
    Development without Sustainability....

    Failing which....

People’s Power will Prevail & We shall Overcome....

Through “Devine” intervention, UMNO, its Leaders & their Lapdogs are now “Outdoing & Destroying” each other with their “Power, Greed & Henious Crimes.”

Our prayers to God Almighty seeking “Sanity, Truth, Justice, Freedom & Equality” will be answered.

Every new day will be another “New Revelation” to reveal the “Truth” in its Self Destruct motion towards its “Demise” - SOON.

Just give them enough rope to “Hang” themselves at every turn in their “Final” chapter.

May God bless, guide & protect this great nation, its remaining assets & its Anak Bangsa Malaysia.

  2. A well written article!
Thing is many do not realise that not-supporting BN stems from wanting to save our nation. Voting was the means to make our voices heard. To deny them the 2/3 majority to shock them into action. But Alas the ruling coalition has learned nothing throughout this one year!

Many voted for the opposition not because they support their ideals but simply because they can stand BN no more.

So the fight for change must continue. However the recent economic depression has people turning away from the cause to look at the rice bowl in their hands.

People say they are ashamed of Malaysia's politics
They say they are sick of the politicking
They say it's time to focus on the fiscal aspect of the country.

    Most notably Anas Zubedy http://letusaddvalue.blogspot.com/
has given up on the fight and has asked for a truce between PR-BN

Hoping that all power-grabbing practices abate and PR-BN sits at a roundtable discussing the future of the country... that's really looking through rose-tinted glasses for me. BN has dropped too low for the lifeline thrown by PR to bail it out, in the event that the merger Government materialises

I know little about governance and politics but I know that the fight for a better Malaysia is not over and We should not let anything derail the process.

I humbly state that as a student I do not feel the brunt of the depression and that may bias my judgement.

  3. Kuan Yew,

I have written about why Najib WON'T rweally help the rakyat through the crisis before.

    Short answer: BLACKMAIL!

If he wanted to stay in power, wouldn't it make sense to make himself popular so that he can win elections? Easiest way would be to make life easier for the rakyat during these tough times.

LGE already gave him one damn good idea - RM 3000 aid for every family earning below a certain level. You think ppl won't love Najib for doing that?

    And the idea costs pittance compared to Najib's RM72billion (RM5b Valuecap, RM7b Stim 1, RM60b Stim 2). RM 3000 x 5 mil families = RM15b only.

Benefits - money to directly help those worst hit by the crisis. The money spreads quickly and widely into the economy because instead of flowing from one tap (govt) into selected projects (contracts), it's freely flowing from millions of hands into essential goods & services nationwide.

Coupled with some properly researched and implemented stimulus into key sectors, this would have a great impact on the economy.

But what we get from Najib? A whopping RM72b of UMNO stimulus packages. Look at the areas focused - most of it will only benefit UMNO Class F contractors. And isn't it a coincidence that the money is not gonna flow until AFTER the UMNO AGM?

Our key sectors immediately hit by the economic crisis are so far the manufacturing sector (there is a fast shrinking market for our factory exports).

On top of that, commodities and crude oil prices have also drastically dropped.

Where is the money to deal with these issues?! Instead, the stimulus packages focus on infrastructure, infrastructure, infrastructure (and rescuing selected companies).

The bulk of the additional spending goes to the people who ALREADY benefit from govt contracts - UMNO/BN contractors and cronies!!

The other problem is - majority of people losing their jobs are factory workers. What kind of retraining can you give them, so that they can quickly look for jobs in other sectors before their families go bankrupt?! If this was implemented early BEFORE they lost their jobs, ok la! Now they ALREADY lost their jobs (or going to), isn't it a bit too late?

And the budget for retraining these people is only a measly RM2b - less than 3% of the package is spent to address the estimated 500,000 unemployed rakyat.

I'm no economist. This is just my first impression of Najib's policies. But I think common sense can tell us a lot even though we may not be educated in economics.

The point I want to make is - why is Najib NOT presenting a more relevant package, instead (as Ku Li pointed out) timing the package with political developments?

My conclusion is (I've written about this before too) - Najib wants to bring the nation to its knees. Because when you are starving, you don't care about righteousness. You just care about who's gonna feed you and your family, even if that person is a crook or murderer!

I'm not a die-hard supporter of any political party of personality. I really don't care who rules as long as they can do it well.

That's why you don't see me singing the praises of any party or trying to spin news to anyone's favour.

I just have my Eyes Wide Open...

  5. As we ponder, it was the greed of people that they chase after earthly materials and neglected the most valuable object, human.

If we do not get rid of UMNO soon, we will kill our future generations.

  6. Follow up on the retraining budget.

    RM2bil / 500,000 unemployed = RM4,000 per person!!!

    QUESTIONS:

    1. What kind of skills training can you give a factory worker/technician/etc for RM4000 in a few months that can prepare him for a job in a new sector?

    2. What are the sectors that have available jobs?

    3. How many jobs are available in those sectors? got 500,000 or not?

Government should be telling the truth to the people so they can be well-prepared instead of presenting a stupid sandiwara that everything is A-OK!

Like Obama - he didn't hide the truth. Open;y tells people that times will be VERY BAD, but he also gives hope. And he also has plan how to help companies and people.

Sini? Finance Minister still in LaLaLand!

Perhaps, they simply can't because you are right!

  8. Eric

I get plenty of abuse in other UMNO/BN-aligned blogs I comment on.

But their replies are just the same old shit. Whatever intelligent opinion i try to present, the only rebuttal they can offer is that I'm a racist chinese hell-bent on robbing the Malays out of everything they own.

It gets so tiresome trying to talk to these fellas. Sometimes i wonder why i submit so many comments only to be talking to brick walls.

But for all their bravado there, none of them dare to engage me here! Those that try have never offered anything more than insults and inane nonsense. And they never seem to want to make a comeback after i throw a few questions at them. I wish they would present some intelligent debate.

I guess they're all just a bunch of jaguh kampung who have convinced themselves that can't survive without UMNO babysitting them.

Look at the level of intellect THAT has produced...
